ADOLESCENT PSYCHOTHERAPY
Is your teenager always “forgetting” to follow through with even the simple things you asked them to do?
Are you frustrated when your teen refuses to accept responsibility when they’ve clearly made a mistake or done something wrong?
Does you teenager accuse you of yelling at them even when you’re speaking in a calm voice?
Is your teenager moody, resentful and withdrawn for no clear reason?
Do you get into shouting matches with your teenager that escalate to the point that you worry it may get out of control?
Is your teenager an “underachiever” earning school grades far below their potential?
Psychotherapy with teenagers requires a special therapeutic skill set as the therapist must actually like doing treatment with this exciting but challenging population. At Innovative Child and Family Psychotherapy and Counseling Associates we have therapists who understand and enjoy the teenage mind, with their out-of-box thinking and roller coaster moods. Teens are often unpredictable and full of contradictions.
Parents often bring in their teens because of family conflicts, behavior and academic problems or depression and anxiety. Frequently, the teen asks to see someone, but then closes up like a clam once the therapy begins. Other times, they’re open books, sharing deep secrets, only to close up later on. They are variously the most trusting of souls, and the most suspicious people you meet. Teens further frustrate parents by acting in a mature, reliable and adult manner, only to behave like forgetful self-centered unreliable children a moment later.
