Why Child and Family Therapy?

The world today is complex and moving so fast, with so many demands and expectations, it’s no wonder that at various times both adults and children manifest the signs and symptoms of anxiety, depression, family discord, work, school and social problems. While most of these concerns are temporary and don’t need professional intervention, there are times you need the help of a trained mental health professional.

Because they have fewer coping mechanisms, children are particularly susceptible to emotional disorders. Accordingly, it may be necessary to bring them in for therapy. At Innovative Child and Family Psychotherapy and Counseling Associates we believe that in order to effectively treat children, we must also take a close look at the family system. There may be obvious or subtle things going on within the family that need to be addressed in family therapy. Even if the concerns are outside of the family, parents and siblings may have difficulty figuring out how to help or deal with the family member who may be having a problem. You’d be surprised to see how often a family member who appears to be doing great is really experiencing inner turmoil that no one notices because everyone else is focused on the person with the “problem.” We treat the entire family to make sure everyone is taken care of. We don’t subscribe to a “blame the patient” point of view, but we firmly believe that every member of the family must take responsibility for how they affect the family unit.

At Innovative Child and Family Psychotherapy and Counseling Associates the goal of child and family therapy is to give each member and the family as a whole the tools and resources to function at their optimal level. Most often, treatment is short-term, but we have the expertise to handle difficult matters including, but not limited to divorce, custody issues, trauma, illness and death, legal concerns, acting out behavior and substance abuse.

Our treatment is Outcome Oriented and measurable. That means clear goals are set and both you and the therapist are able to see how the goals are being met.

If circumstances are such that additional treatment modalities are indicated we discuss them with you ahead of time, because your child is unique and this is not a “one size fits all” technique.
